What Woo-Woo Really Means and Why It's Time to Reclaim It
Is It Really ‘Woo-Woo’ or Are You Just Remembering Your Power?
Recently, I was at a show by Alana Fairchild, a spiritual teacher, creatrix, singer-songwriter, and the voice behind many beloved meditations and oracle decks. It was a room full of spiritually inclined, open-hearted people.
And yet… when someone asked me what I do, I felt it - that flicker of hesitation.
As I began to explain my work around Purpose, Human Design, and Stone Medicine, I noticed myself softening my language, subtly preparing for the moment they might tune out or roll their eyes. Even in that crowd.
I thought, “Will they think I’m a bit woo-woo?”
Even after doing the inner work to reconnect with my higher self, that conditioning still crept in.
That hesitation shows just how deeply the stigma around 'woo-woo' runs. How quick we are to apologise for our intuitive wisdom, sacred feminine energy, and authentic power.
The Truth About Woo-Woo: It’s Not What You Think
The term ‘woo-woo’ gets thrown around a lot, often dismissively. It’s used to label anything mystical, intuitive, or unconventional as flaky, irrational, or just plain silly.
When you look up ‘woo-woo’ it’s defined as a derogatory or dismissive term related to unconventional beliefs, mysticism, and nonsense with many saying it comes from the wailing sound of a ghost.
But the dismissal of mystical knowledge isn’t new. For centuries, we’ve been taught to distrust what we feel, silence our inner knowing, and apologise for our connection to something greater.
Just take a look at our history. The witch hunts weren’t about witches, they were about control. The wisdom of nature, cycles, and energy was labelled dangerous or demonic.
Today, that sacred knowing often gets brushed off with one word, “woo.”
Just like many of the deliberate acts in our history to erase the sacred feminine, silence our intuitive wisdom, our inner power and our magic, twisting the definition of words to a completely different meaning and deeply embedding this into our culture is a tactic that is still used today to keep us small.
For example, the word ‘sin’ originated from ancient times where Sin, the Moon God/ess was honoured for her cycles associated with sexuality, fertility and harvests and was eventually twisted to meaning that honouring feminine divinity was ‘sinful’ and evolved over time to the meaning we place on the word today.
The Sacred Origins of Woo
So what has this got to do with being ‘woo-woo’?
Well, the term ‘woo’ actually has nothing to do with the wailing sound of a ghost but rather originates from the ancient Chinese name for Shaman, ‘Wu’.
The symbol for Wu (巫) depicts a person walking through a wall, moving between worlds, acting as an intermediary between Heaven and Earth.
In today’s world, this archetype reflects the multidimensional aspect of ourselves that trusts her inner wisdom, knows how to tap into the quantum field of all possibility and honours her divinity.
When you meditate or simply sit in stillness you tap into your inner wisdom, your Higher Self.
When you cultivate a relationship with Mother Earth and utilise her regenerative and transformational gifts such as plant remedies, crystals, forest bathing or rejuvenating in her waters, you tap into Divine love.

Science Meets Mysticism
Where astrology was once considered ‘woo-woo’, science now reveals how neutrinos pass through and influence us every moment.
Visualising and feeling into what we want to create, once considered esoteric, is now understood by quantum science as key to manifestation.
Each time you listen to your intuition, commune with nature, trust invisible divine forces, and stay in the flow of magic, you’re stepping fully into your sacred feminine power.
It’s not ‘woo-woo’ but rather, that Wu aspect of you is your natural empowered state that was long forgotten. Your multidimensional self is remembering who she truly is.
